Will The Mobile Web Kill Off The App Store?

Join us on Monday, May 3rd, 2010 for our monthly Mobile Monday Miami meetup, a free event.

This month, we will discuss whether “The Mobile Web Will Kill Off The App Store.” Will new mobile browsers allow developers to produce apps for any platform? According to an article in Wired Magazine:

Web proponents such as Mozilla and Google dream that internet standards will enable any app to run on any device, just as Java proponents touted a “write once, run anywhere” vision in the 1990s. Similarly, Adobe’s Flash emerged as a cross-platform environment for creating animations, games and apps for the web. But many consumers and developers have complained that Java and Flash exhibit bugs, performance problems and security vulnerabilities, among other issues. And Java’s promises of universality didn’t quite work out, because different implementations of the Java virtual machine (not to mention wildly varying hardware capabilities) mean that, even today, Java coders need to rework their apps for each target device. But web proponents maintain that the wide acceptance of next-generation internet standards, particularly HTML5, will win out where Java failed. Read More

Please let us know when you RSVP whether you would like to participate on the panel.

We’ll be meeting at The Irish Playwright bar and restaurant, conveniently located at The Village of Gulfstream Park, Hallandale, FL. For directions, please consult the map or call The Irish Playwright at 954-457-7563.

Many thanks to Jeff Sass, VP, Bus Dev, Myxer & MoMo Miami Exec Committee member for having suggested a panel topic that turned out so many attendees despite the heat of mid-summer Miami, for his pre-event organization of the panel and for his excellent & amusing introductory history of the smartphone.

Special thanks as well to panel moderator Bridget Carey, Technology Reporter, Miami Herald, for her thoughtful and probing questions of the panelists and directing the Q&A with the audience. And, of course, to the panelists themselves: Policarpo Guerrero, CEO, MSCorp & Open Ovi blog; John Collette, Software Engineer, Myxer; Edwin Hernandez, Principal Staff Software Engineer, Motorola; and Ben Hopkins, Independent iPhone Developer.

Finally, a debt of gratitude to Angelique Swann of the Doubletree Hotel Coconut Grove for having generously provided the meetup venue, with ample space and great views of Coconut Grove and beyond from the 20th floor of the hotel.

Next meetup is scheduled for Thursday September 17th in Coral Gables … with more details on the venue and program to come soon, so stay tuned!
